Kate Winthrop exists at Millbank High School. She isn’t on the lowest rung of the social ladder, but definately isn’t at the top either. The story begins with Kate attending a party put on by the Proud Crowd, the A-listers of the school. An invitation showed up in her locker and even though she was reluctant to go since she doesn’t run in those circles, her two best friends, Callie and Dev, insist she go so she can tell them all about what happens. The party isn’t a fun experience for her though. Gretchen, the queen bee of the school, lets her know with catty remarks that she was never supposed to be there. She also calls her 71 and Kate becomes curious about the refernce.
One night at home while on the computer, Kate gets the answer to her question about 71. She receives an IM giving her a website leading her to the Millbank Social Stock Market. The MSSM is a ranking of all 141 girls in the senior class at Millbank High. Kate learns that she is ranked number 71. After filling in Callie and Dev about the stock market, they device a plan to increase Kate’s value. In order to enter the market, you have to put in $500. At the end of the school year, the person with the largest portfolio, wins the pot which would be about $25,000.
After developing a business plan, Dev, Kate, and Callie, begin to implement the changes to her wardrobe, hair, and other daily behaviors. Throughout the ups and downs of the market, Kate learns about friendship, love, and the importance of popularity.
J.M. Steele, author of The Taker, has written another relevant novel about the pressures of high school. The unique angle to this story is the stock market element. It would be a great way to connect literature to an economics class.

i haven’t finished this book yet, but it is FANTASTIC so far. I can really relate to it. It must tear Dev apart to watch someone else go through with what seems like her dream. It was just a little crazy with the whole grandfather thing…. But then again im only on page 227. and its so crazy how kate is going along with will and not jack.is she completely blind?! Will is pathetic. Honestly the only wise person in this book is Callie. I’m reading every second and i just cant stop!
I finished it in like a DAY. it is fantastic. Albeit I think there are a few grammer mistakes, it’s fabulous!!!
I havent read this book yet, but i read the first book by J. M. Steele and it was really good. It’s title is The Taker, and i sugest that you read it too!
This was very good. Gives strenghth to the fear that teenagers have that everyone is watching their every move (even though it isn’t really true), but has a good message about how caring about what everyone thinks doesn’t make that much sense. Will definitely look up the other title by these authors.
I’m A Freshman In College
And
I Still Enjoyed This Book!
I Hope She Publishes More Books!
i just finished Steele’s first book, the Taker, and i thought it was pretty good. Minus some gramatical errors and a lack of depth to the over all writing style, it’s entertaining. im 15 and a sophomore in highschool, but i devoure books on the daily basis, so this book didn’t hold very much substance for me. i recomend it for anyone who wants an easy read with a good story, or tweens in general. However, some of the content and language in the book are slightly advanced for the reading level, so if you’re a parent be cautioned that there is some strong language (rarely, but it is there) and a make out scene or two. otherwise, great story and very relatable.
I wuldve gone to the black and white ball with jack if I was her cu will is just so fake and pathetic and jack liked her in the begining and was nice!!!!!!!!!! Hood book though
Read the book and i loved it! Honestly? i wish they have a real market site about schools!
the market rocked….if i wouldn’t get in like major trouble i would so make one in real life. i wish my friends would do the same stuff as callie and dev…i totally want that stuff to happen to me…kinda wish she ended up with someone though…
I started this book this morning and I am almost done with it. I find it pretty good. It could be better and it could be worse. But it really gets your mind of of the reality of life and drags you into this book. I am only in middle school and this book shows me what the future can be like if I don’t take charge and speak out, not just for popularity. I would mostly be like Callie. I am not #1 or #140. I am about #11 or #12. I hang with popular girls and would consider myself one. I have circles and we keep secret just between us. I would recommend this book to teens who are entering high school.
totally agreee
so know what u mean
i like the outher cover better
this book is really good! i’m on page 277, and it is really interesting! i think a market like that would be cool.

I can’t believe those of you who loved the book WANT to have a market.
I’d be curious to see who ranked, but at the end of the day, I don’t care and it doesn’t matter!
It’s like the boy’s version of a burn book, exploiting girls to be their eye candy. Not saying you should look like a troll (take of your appearances), but you want a guy who loves you, not a guy who lusts after your legs, at least until he sees a girl with smaller thighs.
The point is, everyone has their insecurities and you shouldn’t treat them differently because of how you judge them. If you want to be popular, ask yourself if you really want to stay friends with those people after they lose their popularity.
I like this book, its rele interesting. Kate is a smart girl she looks for the best. The Market was very realistic for someone in high skool, and it tells things that might actually happen, I think you guyz should read it
im still reding it but im so amazed at what she wants to become
I read this book a while back and literally COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. It’s so edgy and unlike anything you will ever read. If you are in to teenage romances, possible drama, or believe in ugly ducklings becoming beautiful….THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. <33
Love,
Lauren
seriously read it haha
i finished reading this book a couple weeks ago and now i have to write a review on it. for the most part i really enjoyed it. it showed that popularity isnt all that matters in life and that being popular dosent mean your better than everyone. my favorite character of all was jack… i felt so bad for him when kate choose will instead of him….. at that point i couldnt stop reading, one day i stayed up until 2 am reading it…………
SUCH A GOOD BOOK!!!!!!
j.m steele writes the best books!!!!!
loved the book!!! they should make a movie on it
lol i would sooo watch it! couldnt stop reading it! finished it yesterday! love it so much. it would be awesome if schools really did have “the market”. i would so start one if i wouldnt get in trouble for it :p and my new role model is deff kate! she may only be a fictional character, but by the way she stood up to gretchen and will at the black & white just made me admire the character
great book!!!
I finished this book awhile ago but it was awesome!! I also agree that they should make a movie on it. I’m doing a book report, and I couldn’t think of a better book to do it on!
