Garrett is dragged out of his bed in the middle of the night, handcuffed, and taken to Lake Harmony, a teenage boot camp, completely against his will. His parents sent him to this behavior modification camp in order to teach him respect and self-discipline.
Garrett is an extremely bright fifteen-year-old. School has never been a problem for him. In fact, he quite often gets bored. He can finish in three days what it takes most students a whole week to accomplish. So, he doesn’t always go to school. Instead he goes to museums or the park to play chess with the old men.
The main reason Garrett’s parents sent him to Lake Harmony though, is Sabrina. Sabrina was one of his teachers until his parents found out about their relationship. His parents got her fired, but didn’t want to go to the police because they didn’t want the story to go public. His mother is always afraid of how things will look to others. Garrett doesn’t stop seeing Sabrina and even begins to stay at her house overnight. His parents feel that Lake Harmony is the only way to break off the relationship.
At Lake Harmony, Garrett experiences isolation, torture, and both physical and mental abuse. His resists the attempts of the staff to brainwash him into thinking he is wrong about everything. Garrett doesn’t accept the fact that just because his parents are paying $4000 a month for him to be at Lake Harmony, they are right about everything.
It is clear Todd Strasser has done a lot of research on the topic of behavior modification programs for teens. There is an afterword describing some of what he discovered and more importantly, a reference list of materials he used to put together his research for the book. Even though the story wraps up a little too quickly and a little too neatly in the end, it is a story that makes you think.
If you want to know if Garrett can make it through with his self-esteem intact? Read BOOT CAMP by Todd Strasser.

I have to Do a Project for this book, so far its Extraordinary!!:D
I love it..
It kinda reminds me of another book named “Holes”

Worst…ending…ever, completely ruined the authors point. Great book up to the end…..
I’m doing a project for high school
I agree with Jamal, the ending runined it!!!
The ending SUCKED BALLS but other than that the book was awesome
I thought that it was like circular reasoning in story form. In the end the conflict is still there with no resolution. I have to wonder what point was the author trying to make with this book?
yupp endin SUX but i need to know what kind of things would be in garretts locker if he went to my high school (required for the project im doing)
can anyone tell me how many times Garrett has been sent to TI?
i hate reading…so much, but this book really caught my attention and i finished it in one day! I hated the ending too..
John, he said he didn’t even know how many times,
riite..d ending of dis book pissed me of. so Garret gets 2 be a hero but den suffers 4 it. i guess “no good deed goes unpunished
I was really hoping Garrett and Sarah would be together i was sooo sad when he went back the Lake harmony and when his parents took him back
. But overall the book was really good.
i dont remeber him playing chess with old men? explain anyone ?
the book was very well written, usually i dont like reading books but this was the best one i have read. But i honestly think there should have been a bit more to the ending, it would be cool if you wrote a sequel
i did a project on this book 2:)
this book sucks
good book i would recommened it to anyone =)
I hate reading…..but this book caught my attention as did another book called Why I Fight by J. Adams Oaks. read it
I really enjoyed the book! I finished it in about four hours, but can anyone tell me the name of Garrett’s two friends that he escapes with? I think Pauly was one of them, but who was the girl?

im watching you…look behind you
Great Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bad ENDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BEST BOOK I’VE EVER READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I really enjoyed reading this book too, but I have to say that I also liked the end, because it makes the book realistic. Yes, it would be typical for a book, that there is a happy end, that Garret is rescued or able to escape, but I think that the author just wanted to tell that normally there is no possibility to escape from those camps which are no fiction, but really exist. So I think, that this is the best ending he could have written.
….the girl Garrett escaped with was Sarah…
This book was so great!! Of course I was dissapointed that (SPOILER ALERT!!!) Garrett did become brainwashed, but I think from an author’s point of view, it was very good and effective- it made me thing! Alot! Lol. Very scary to think places like that exist, I want to look into it more now. I just loved that Strasser got across a very important message and made people think while still keeping it entertaining.
Answers: Garrett never said he didn’t know how many times he’d been to TI, he only said he didn’t know how long he was there each time. Sorry, but I don’t remember either!! Just scan through the book and count each time. Also, his friends were Pauly and Sarah.
Question of my own: Are Todd Strasser’s other books alot like this true, and based on true situations, or are they completely fictional?? I haven’t read them, and I’m really curious.
So i have never been a fan of books or reading but this book changed my mind. I stayed up late reading the book and read it two times.Best book ever no doubt about it. i highly recomend it for teenagers.
Very good book.
Doing a project on it.
Just cant figure out the theme?
I thought the ending effectively demonstrated the power of the psychological and physial abuse that occurred.
Despite that, I thought it was really well written and it really opened my eyes.
Some of the themes were Power (and lack of), Obedience (to parents and authority) and Doing the right things. I used these for my book report. Hope it helps!
i have a project too
i think the name was sarah
AMAZING READ IT 3 TIMES
read it, it amazing but the end was less then what i as expecting, beginning as great end not so good, but over all it was great!
thomas the other girl is sarah
this is my first big book ive read since 6 grade danggg its been 6 years not a big fan of reading but my teacher forced me now i like reading it x)
What do you mean the ending ruined it? Come on now……. the ending was the best part like it gave me the chills when i read it…..He was sent there to learn to respect his parents and that was one thing you get what you deserve…Even though he didn’t that’s what lake harmony wanted to get through his head… This book is one of my favorites!
The coolest book ive ever read…. really a very good one) and now i gotta do my journal for it
wat person has beed in the camp for 2 years and still is a level one & wat was the distraction in order to escape i didnt read all of the book so can somone help me
Dont agree with people who say that the ending is bad… It is a good endind… because Garrett admits his mistakes and that he was wrong… what else you wanted there?? Oh.. lol maybe Sabrina?
